Pebworth, St Peter

The Pebworth Parish Church of St Peter is in the West of the Village on a bend in the road which does not make it easy to park. It is set in a large well maintained churchyard with benches should you wish to sit an relax.

The ringing room is reached by climbing a short steep stair/ladder that starts inside the tower. Considering that there are 10 bells in this tower there is not much room. There is no seating for those not ringing. There is a large arch looking to the West but it is mostly stone with just a couple of small windows, the opposite side of the tower is another large arch which is open and looks over the nave.

I visited for the first time on Saturday 26th July 2008 to join the WDCRA Southern Branch practice. There were only 8 ringers, but it was a nice summer evening.

With only a few of us I got to ring a quite a lot. They really stretched the learner, i.e. me, which I do not mind since I go to learn as much as I can from ringing with accomplished ringers. I can now just about manage a touch of Plain Bob Doubles but I was not given the opportunity to consolidate that. The feeling seems to be, and I think that it is right, that if you can do one variation of Plain Bob you can quickly learn others. We started with a couple of plain courses of Plain Bob Triples with me on bell #3 which I muddled through. Keeping track of where I am in the cycle of work is one difficulty particularly remembering to do the 5-6 up dodge before the 3-4 up dodge. The others then rang Cambridge, I think it is going to be quite a while before I can manage that sort of method. The next time I rang it was Plain Bob Minor. They were really making me work hard. I find methods that do not have a Tenor laying at the back add a layer of difficulty so that was the first thing to cope with. As with Plain Bob Triples I also find both the 5-6 dodges hard to see. And to really stretch me they threw in bobs since they are similar to those in Plain Bob Doubles and the same as those in Plain Bob Triples! When I left I was exhausted, but it was tremendously rewarding as a practice!

I visited on Thursday 2nd July 2009 to join the practice of the Evesham Bell tower team who were unable to use their home tower because of a concert.

We had enough people to ring all 10 bells though, as yet, I know no methods for more than 6 bells. On two occasions we rang call changes on the 10 which went quite nicely. I rang the Treble twice for touches of Grandsire Cinques and also bell #2 of the back 8 for Grandsire Triples. It is certainly good practice to ring on more bells.

The Bells

The tower has a ring of 10 bells with a tenor weighing 11-3-9 in F. Additional information on the Church and bells can be found at Dove's Guide and WDCRA.

While Pebworth is in Worcestershire the Parish Church of St Peter belongs to the Diocese of Gloucester and is affiliated to both the Worcestershire & Districts Change Ringing Association and the Gloucester & Bristol Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers.
