Hinton on the Green, St Peter

The Church of St Peter in Hinton on the Green is situated on the south side of the road running through the village. The tower is at the west end of the Church and access to the ringing up a steep wooden ladder. The room overlooks the nave and has plenty of room to ring the 8 bells.

I visited for the first time on Monday 24th March 2008 as part of the WDCRA tour prior to the AGM. There is no regular practice at this tower so I took this opportunity to ring here. Our host told us how the bells were arranged but through some misunderstanding we did not know which bell the treble was. I started by ringing up what I thought was the Tenor. This seemed very light so I wondered what the other bells were like, it soon became apparent that it wasn't the tenor but was in fact the treble. After eventually raising the bells I changed place and rang bell #5 for Rounds and Call Changes. These were quite a light set of 8 bells and quite easy to ring.

Hinton on the Green has also given it's name to the Hinton Surprise Major method composed by Arthur Craven.

The Bells

The tower has a peal of 8 bells with a tenor weighing 10-1-8 in G. The church had 4 bells, re-cast by Clark and Bushell, Evesham, as 5 bells in 1705 at the expense of David Warren. In 1931 three lighter bells, cast by John Taylor, Loughborough, were added as bells #1, #2 and#3 [1, 2].

Dove's Guide includes details of the bells at St Peter with more information provided by the Worcestershire & Districts Change Ringing Association.
