Clent, St Leonard

The Clent Church, St Leonard [1] is situated on Church Avenue in the middle of the village. Park is limited.

I visited for the first time on Monday 5th May 2009 for a session arranged in advance of the WDCRA AGM. The ringing room is reached by climbing a stone spiral staircase. The entrance to the staircase is ouside the tower on the South side. This is an 8 bell tower and there is not much room for anyone not ringing a bell. The room has two small windows with one almost completely covered by the clock mechanism. The ceiling is odd with half being clad in timber and much lower than the other half meaning that bells #1, #5, #7 and #8 are on one side and have a much longer pull than the other four bells. I rang some Rounds and Call Changes on bell #6 and cannot say that I enjoyed the experience very much. Those ringing the lower set of bells seemed to have some difficulties, particularly bell #2.

The Bells

The tower has a ring of 8 bells with a tenor weighing 11-0-18 in F. Dove's Guide includes details of the bells at St Leonard. No information on the bells history or inscriptions was to be found in the tower.

The Worcestershire & Districts Change Ringing Association have additional information on St Leonard, Clent.
