Beckford, St John the Baptist

The Parish Church of St John the Baptist [1, 2] in Beckford is situated on the North side of Main St with limited parking nearby. The ringing room is reached by climbing a stone spiral staircase the entrance to which is from the outside of the tower on the North side. The room is spacious with windows on 3 sides and lots of seating for those not ringing.

While today Beckford is in Worcestershire it was until 1965 in Gloucestershire which provides some explanation for why it is in the Diocese of Gloucester. Historical information is also available at British History Online.

2009-11-19

I visited for the first time on Thursday 19th November 2009 for the "Two Hundred and Fourtyfirst Mid-week Outing" of the Four Shires Guild of Bell Ringers. I rang up bell #4 followed by the Tenor for a touch of Stedman Doubless.

The Bells

The tower has a ring of 6 bells with a tenor weighing 13-3-0 in F. Dove's Guide includes details of the bells at St John the Baptist and additional information is provided by The Gloucester & Bristol Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers.

No information on the bells history or inscriptions was to be found in the tower.
