Wolvey, St John the Baptist

The Wolvey Parish Church of St John the Baptist is located in the North of the village on the East side of Church Hill. There is some limited parking near the School Lane entrance though I parked near the "double mini roundabouts" on The Square. The ringing room is reached by climbing a vertical steel ladder the bottom of which is inside the tower. The ringing room has a large arched window facing West and another one facing over the nave.

I visited for the first time on Thursday 18th June 2009 for the "Two Hundred and Thirtysixth Mid-week Outing" of the Four Shires Guild of Bell Ringers. I rang up bell #5 which went fine until I got near the balance when there was a judder. During our ringing all those that rang bell #5 experienced the same. I rang a touch of Plain Bob Doubles on bell #3 and found the layout of the bells a little disconcerting, there is a sizable gap between the Treble and bell #2 which made me feel that bell #2 was the Treble. I rang the Tenor for a touch of Stedman and then rang it down. With the exception of bell #5 the ones I rang all went nicely.

The Bells

The tower has a ring of 6 bells with a tenor weighing 12-0-24 in G. Dove's Guide includes details of the bells at St John the Baptist.

The Coventry Diocesan Guild of Church Bellringers also have information on the Wolvey Parish Church of St John the Baptist.
