Packwood, St Giles

The parish Church of St Giles, Packwood is tucked away at the end of a short lane that branches East off Glasshouse Lane. There doesn't appear to be a village per se named Packwood rather it seems to be associated with Packwood House which is about half a mile to the Southeast. There is parking on the left of the lane just before you reach the entrance to the churchyard.

The South face of the Church tower has a sundial rather than a clock. Inside the church there are some very faint paintings on the wall containing the arch from the nave to the chancel. It was a gloomy winter day when I visited and it was hard to make them out, on a brighter day they might be clearer.

Ringing takes place from the ground floor and the tower is at the West end of the nave. There isn't a lot of room to ring the 8, very light, bells.

I visited for the first time on Thursday 18th February 2010 for the "Two Hundred and Fourtyfourth Mid-week Outing" of the Four Shires Guild of Bell Ringers. I only rang the Tenor since I'm not too good at ringing very light bells and these are very light. I rang for some Call Changes, Grandsire Triples and rang down. Ringing the Tenor did not present any difficulties.

The Bells

The tower has a ring of 6 bells with a tenor weighing 6-3-14 in B. Dove's Guide includes details of the bells at St Giles and more information is provided by the St Martin's Guild of Church Bell Ringers.
