Kington, St Mary
The Kington Parish Church of St Mary [listing] is located on a hill in the north of this small market town beside Church Road. There is some parking space in a lane on the west side of the church.
The church is on the top of a hill with attractive churchyard surrounding the top of the hill. The ringing room is reached by climbing a stone staircase on the east face of the tower. The room is not as large as you might expect looking at the tower from outside, thick walls! There are two sizable windows on the south and west faces and a ladder leading to the bells on the east face beside the entrance. That said, there is plenty of space to sit several ringers in addition to those ringing.

I visited for the first time on Sunday 2nd September 2012 to join their service ringing practice. They like to keep their visitors busy so I rang bells #3 and #4 for touches of Plain Bob Doubles, bell #5 for a touch of Grandsire Doubles and the Tenor for some rounds to finish off the morning ring. All the bells rang nicely and I was made very welcome.
I was invited to travel to both nearby Lyonshall and Presteigne for another ring but had to decline since I was only visiting Kington to complete the Mortimer Trail we had started earlier in the year.
The Bells
The tower has a ring of 6 bells with a tenor weighing 11-0-23 in F. Dove's Guide includes details of the bells at St Mary with more information provided by the Hereford Diocesan Guild of bellringers.
