(Lower) Oddington, St Nicholas

The parish Church of St Nicholas, Oddington, is situated on the East side of Church Road about a quarter of a mile south of the main part of the village. There is no heating and no electricity and as a consequence the church is normally only used in the summer months though there is a candle lit service on St Nicholas Day each year. The church is famous for wall paintings of the Doom on the wall of the nave. There is parking on Church Road beside the church.

The tower occupies the southeast corner of the church with two arches opening on to the nave and south aisle. Ringing is from the ground floor and there is plenty of room to ring the six bells.

2010-09-25

I visited for the first time on Saturday 25th September 2010 as the third, and final, tower [1st, 2nd] on the Four Shires Guild Annual Walking Tour.

By now we were down to 5 ringers but were fortunate enough to bump into the girl we had met earlier at Bledington doing her Duke of Edinburgh's Award. We were also joined by our local host. I rang up bell #5 followed by some Rounds and Call Changes with our DoE ringer. I then rang bell #5 for a touch of Plain Bob Doubles with no cover and a touch of Grandsire Doubles on the Tenor, again with no cover.I rang the treble for sore Single Court and ended by ringing down bell #5. Nice bells.

The Bells

The tower has a ring of 6 bells with a tenor weighing 9-2-20 in G. Dove's Guide includes details of the bells at St Nicholas and more information is provided by the Gloucester & Bristol Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers.
