Northleach, St Peter & St Paul

The Church St Peter & St Paul is in the Southwest of the small market town of Northleach near Market Place. I managed to park in Market Place.

This is a big Church, which is surprisingly light inside, with a modern stained glass window at the East end. The Bell Tower is 100' tall so be prepared for a climb.

The ringing room is reached by climbing a clockwise stone spiral staircase with 56 steps and whose entrance is inside the tower. The ringing room is large, there were 21 of us in the room and there was plenty of space to ring the 8 bells even with so many people.

I visited for the first time on Thursday 16th July 2009 for the "Two Hundred and Thirtyseventh Mid-week Outing" of the Four Shires Guild of Bell Ringers. I arrived a little before the top of the hour and was treated to an unusual ring as the clock struck the hour. I discovered later that it plays 'Oh worship the King' to the tune of Hanover.

Perhaps this elaborate striking was related to a problem with the clock hammers and bell #6. The tower captain wanted to be sure the problem was fixed before we rang. All turned out to be fine and I rang up bell #5. The only ringining I managed was a touch of Stedman Triples on the Tenor. Both bells that I rang were easy enough to handle.

The Bells

The tower has a ring of 8 bells with a tenor weighing ~18-2-0 in E. Dove's Guide includes details of the bells at St Peter & St Paul.

There is some additional information provided by The Gloucester & Bristol Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers.
