Colesbourne, St James Apostle & Martyr

St. James Church, Colesbourne is in the grounds of Colesbourne Park. The church dates to the 15th Century and is Cruciform in plan.

I visited for the first time on Sunday 10th February 2007, though not originally to ring. I was visiting Colesbourne Park with my wife to look at the gardens and in particular to see the snowdrops. However, we went down to the Church after hearing the bells being rung and I was invited to join them for a ring. The ringing room is rather small but there is plenty of room to ring the 5 bells. The church was full of people though looking at both the church and watching the ringing. I joined them for couple of plain courses of Plain Bob Doubles and then watched them for a while longer and noted that they call to the back.

The Bells

The tower has a ring of 5 bells ( cast by Abraham Rudhall in 1719) with a tenor weighing 5-2-25 in C. Dove's Guide includes details of the bells at St James Apostle & Martyr and more information is provided by the Gloucester & Bristol Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers.
