Chalford, Christ Church

Christ Church is on the North side of the London Road (A419) which runs through the village of Chalford. I managed to park on London Road right beside the Church.

The ringing room is reached by climbing a carpeted flight of steps and has windows on three sides. The base of the stair is inside the tower and can be accessed from a door in the South side of the tower, i.e. beside the road. While it is not a particularly large room there is plenty of room to ring the 6 bells with some additional space for those not ringing. The bells are unusual in that they are made of steel rather than the much more common bell metal.

For anyone arranging a tour, there is a toilet.

I visited for the first time on Thursday 17th September 2009 for the "Two Hundred and Thirtyninth Mid-week Outing" of the Four Shires Guild of Bell Ringers. I rang up bell #4 and it was not the best rise I have participated in. The tenor seemed to be quite difficult to ring. This also proved to be the case when I rang a touch of Bob Minor, we had to ring quite slowly to accomodate the Tenor.

The Bells

The tower has a ring of 6 bells with a tenor weighing ~10-0-0 in F. The unusual feature noted above is that these are steel bells. Dove's Guide includes details of the bells at Christ Church and more information is provided by the Gloucester & Bristol Diocesan Association of Church Bell Ringers.
